United Nations, Knowledge Foundation and DFINITY Join Forces

Three-year Partnership To Fundamentally Transform Education

09 April 2024 — Today, during his opening address at the 2024 Blockchain in Education Summit at Oxford University, Immersive Education Initiative and Knowledge Foundation Director Aaron E. Walsh announced the formation of a three-year partnership between the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Knowledge Foundation and DFINITY Foundation. Together the organizations will fundamentally transform the way in which learners, educators, and educational content creators acquire, distribute and generate knowledge via Knowledge Token® and the Internet Computer platform.

Over the coming three years the partner organizations will co-develop an innovative suite of technology products to educate participants on anti-corruption topics through a series of unique hackathon (coding competition) events under the UNODC Coding4Integrity youth hackathon framework. The hackathons, of which four will occur each year for the coming three years, achieve this through the ongoing development of Knowledge Token® on the Internet Computer blockchain platform.

The 2024 Oxford Hackathon that commenced today marks the inception of the three-year partnership between UNODC, Knowledge Foundation, and DFINITY Foundation.

How To Participate

To participate as a collaborator, or to host or sponsor the hackathons or related events, please contact a Knowledge Foundation Director.

UNODC

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is the United Nations agency mandated to support Member States on topics related to crime prevention and criminal justice. In so doing, UNODC works with Member States to contribute to global peace and security, human rights and development by making the world safer from drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism. Furthermore, UNODC plays a key role in promoting multilateral action when it comes to preventing and responding to crime as it acts as Secretariat of relevant intergovernmental bodies and supports States in the implementation of international standards.

Knowledge Foundation

The Knowledge Foundation is an educational organization responsible for the design, development, deployment and ongoing maintenance of the global Knowledge Token system and related open international standards for blockchain technology in the field of education.

Knowledge Token® is intellectual currency and, as such, may be used to pay for goods and services such as mobile phones, tablets, computers, games, textbooks, tuition and more. As an incentive and participation token that is awarded to learners in exchange for intellectual achievements, while privately and securely recording corresponding academic progress, Knowledge Tokens are issued in amounts that correspond to the units or amounts of knowledge, skills and/or credits that learners earn.

DFINITY Foundation

DFINITY Foundation is a contributor to the Internet Computer blockchain, a decentralized public compute platform. Leveraging the Internet Computer, the team is developing the Knowledge Token® system and protocol. The Internet Computer enables creation of software directly on the public blockchain, eliminating the need of any trusted intermediaries. It also facilitates integration with external web services and supports on-chain execution of AI models. In pursuit of this vision, DFINITY Foundation will collaborate with UNODC and Knowledge Foundation on hosting a series of hackathons at prominent universities worldwide, fostering collaboration between academics and software engineers to advance the project’s shared goals.
